How do I gain weight / put on weight ?

Cambridge July 2006

1. Absorption

It's not what you eat, but what you absorb that counts.

Weight gain is more than filling up with high protein drinks or stocking up on high sugary based snacks.

To achieve your ideal body shape consider 2 key elements

Negative nutrition affects your ability to absorb nutrients from food. If you are not absorbing to the max then you won't be getting the maximum benefit from the food you eat which will slow down your weight gain. Absorption can be affected by many factors:

(any of these apply to you?)

Are you a smoker?

Coffee drinker?

Drink alcohol?

Eat fast food?

Eat processed food?

Take prescription medicine?

Many, many more

2. Your energy balance

You need to regularly take in more calories than you burn.  Set yourself realistic targets, and aim to gain gradually as part of a balanced diet, rather than simply eating more fried foods or unhealthy snacks!

A key consideration is your daily energy usage:

  • Your metabolic rate affects how much you use during the day. The rate varies between people slows with age.

  • Your daily activity - does your job involve physical activity? - this will drain the system.

  • Or do you take part in sport / exercise?  Sports can often make the situation worse as you can be draining your system each time you play.

  • Similarly how much energy do you put in your system?  Skip one meal (or have a poor appetite) then you start with a negative balance.

To gain weight you need to consume more calories in an easy to take AND easy to absorb form.

Pre-programmed weight

It takes many years to develop eating habits. You need to follow a weight gain program for 90 days for the body to 'forget' the old and 'get used ' to the new. It is very important to complete a long term program. Otherwise your body, just like a spring, will unclasp and be back to its old weight.

" I've been underweight since childhood.   My sister called me "skeleton on batteries". My parents tried to calm me down, saying I would put on weight when I stopped growing.

Since 16 I have weighed 62 kg, while my height was 182 cm.  When I went to the beach, I was ashamed to get undressed, and even when it was very hot, I wore jeans instead of shorts. My thin legs were killing me

I have been using Herbalife products since May 2004. I have not been sick even once, though people around me have. I gave up smoking very easily. My hair is thick and shining again. I don't crunch my teeth and my knees don't hurt any more.  What gives me most satisfaction is the fact that I have gained 15 kg during my first three months

What if you have specific problems ?

2 questions we were asked :

Question 1

I want to put on weight but am just not hungry.    I can easily skip breakfast and have nothing to eat till later in the day.  The weight gain drinks I have tried I just couldn't finish them and they made me feel sick

Our Answer

To gain weight you need to take in more calories during the day.

But just not having an appetite is quite common, resulting in you either eating little or skipping meals (skipping breakfast most often)

It is easy to say you should be putting more on your plate (or not leaving any) but what if you just feel like throwing up ?

There are some practical, easy, steps you can take which will help:

  • Might sound strange (as you will be burning calories) but try to do exercise - even if it's walking or taking the stairs.  Exercise boosts the appetite

  • More smaller meals during the days will help.  It's far better to have more smaller meals then a few large ones

  • Weight gain drinks will help, in particular as you need to take in food first thing in the morning try to have a drink.  There is an enormous variation in drinks - try to avoid those you have to blend with milk because that might be causing you feeling sick.  The drink we recommend (formula 1) can be blended with fruit juice or water and will be light and easy to drink - even first thing in the morning

  • Try adding supplements (or even coffee or tea will help)

Question 2

I want to put on weight what is the danger that I will only put it onto my tummy and end up with a fat upper body and skinny legs ?

Our Answer

When it comes to putting on weight you need a plan that is based on your natural body shape.

The reason is that your body tends to put on weight first in places that come most natural.

Hence if you want to gain weight all over (as opposed to on your waist) then your plan need to reflect this.

Find your body shape below.

3 Body Shapes for Women:

Upper:

You are at danger of gaining it on your upper body and having skinny legs   To gain a nice shape you will need the right exercise and diet.

Lower:

Often partially inherited.

If you want to gain weight but not 'fat hips and thighs'

Then diet is important but you really need to focus on certain workout routines.

Proportionate :

Good news is that you will gain weight all over

Yes exercise will help but diet is the key.

My name is Carsten S, 35 years old.

I am 2 meters in length and I never have weight more then 72 kilos. That of course is not enough. All my life I am trying to gain some weight, but I never succeeded. Doctors, diets, different things from the stores and reform houses; nothing worked. If even your doctor gives you the advice to eat much fat, cream and butter, you are really wondering what you are doing. I mean, probably your cholesterol will gain some points, but I don’t think that is a very healthy manner to gain weight?!

My bodyfat-index was so low it couldn't even be measured....

Since September 2001 I had daily 3 Herbalife shakes meals after my normal food. Now I gained more than 12 kilos in weight, and feel fit and healthy. My energy level had clearly increased, and I also have more resistance against viruses.

One advice for people that want to gain weight: don't make the shakes too thick, just try to keep them drinkable. I ate 3 shakes per day, after my normal meals, and got a very full feeling if I used for instance yoghurts. They just drink a little easier when you use juices or half-juice/half yoghurt.
