How do I put on weight ?

Weight gain is more than filling up with high protein drinks or stocking up on high sugary based snacks.  

To achieve your ideal body shape consider 2 key elements: 

 

1. Absorption  

For weight gain it's not what you eat, but what you absorb that counts.

Negative nutrition affects your ability to absorb nutrients from food. If you are not absorbing to the max then you won't be getting the maximum benefit from the food you eat which will slow down the amount you will gain. Absorption can be affected by many factors:

Are you a smoker?

Coffee drinker? 

Drink alcohol?

Eat fast food?

Eat processed food?

Take prescription medicine?

2. Your energy balance

You need to regularly take in more calories than you burn.  Set yourself realistic targets, and aim to gain gradually as part of a balanced diet, rather than simply eating more fried foods or unhealthy snacks!

A key consideration is your daily energy usage:

  • Your metabolic rate affects how much you use during the day. The rate varies between people slows with age.

  • Your daily activity - does your job involve physical activity? - this will drain the system.

  • Or do you take part in sport / exercise?  Sports can often make the situation worse as you can be draining your system each time you play.

  • Similarly how much energy do you put in your system? Skip one meal (or have a poor appetite) then you start with a negative balance.

To put on weight you need to consume more calories in an easy to take AND easy to absorb form.

Pre-programmed weight

It takes many years to develop eating habits. You need to follow a program for 90 days for the body to 'forget' the old weight and 'get used ' to the new one. It is very important to complete a long term program. Otherwise your body, just like a spring, will unclasp and be back to its old weight.
